Discovery Days is a Community Project on a new estate on the outskirts of Witney. Funding has been made available to put on events covering the cost of hall hire, set up etc. These monies are taken from 'Cutting Edge' funds, a Diocese of Oxford project developing Fresh Expressions of community and church. It is supported by St. Marys Church, Witney
Its aim is to build community by setting up estate based events that help those living there.
Regular community events held are......
- "Drop" in for coffee weekly
- Toddlers @10 group
- Book groups
- Men's football team
- Craft and drama clubs
- Singles group
- Ladies events
There are also ‘one off’ socials such as Jazz evenings, Pamper evenings ,Toddler Discos, walks, craft events that are open to all.
The project co-ordinator works alongside health, social services, the police and other agencies to help promote good community values.
A Residents Association has been formed and a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. Web site link www.madleyparkresidents.org.uk
West Oxfordshire District Council regularly turns to the Residents Association for help and advice concerning the estate and its needs. Regular Open Residents meetings are held, to which all are invited
We were excited that a playground was built in August 04 and a 60 bed Care Home in March 05 and a community shop opened in Nov 05 as did the take away. The new schools Madley Park and Springfield, act as great focus for, and are central to community activities.
New projects that are being explored are the building of a Community Centre with potential community usage, as well as a teenage centre and a further play area.
You can also attend events with a Christian flavour....
- A Sunday afternoon Family gathering called JIGSAW with Christian themes
- Weekly Small Groups gathering for Christians on the estate
- Services at Madley Park Care Home
- New groups for those searching for faith called Alpha
- An interactive social evening each month where you can 'BREATHE'
