Over the past few years we have worked closely with Snaith Salads and the leading dutch seed companies to test and develop a range of hydroponically grown lettuce.
Hydroponically grown trio lettuce has developed rapidly as a category in Northern Europe over the past 15 years.
The system lends itself to more open type lettuce varieties, which can be susceptible to soiling when grown in an open field environment.
The controlled nature of the system lends itself to multi block seeding to grow mixed multi type lettuces.
We have worked closely with Mathew Brankley at Snaith Salads to optimise a range of solo and multi-leaf varieties within the hydroponic growing system, creating limited edition and bespoke product mixes.”
Snaith Salads - Yorkshire
Glasshouse production commenced in Snaith in the 1930s during the great depression. The aim was to resettle unemployed workers from depressed industrial areas, of the North East.
1,100 smallholders were set up on government owned land across 26 settlement. One of which is West Bank, with 37 nurseries. The West Bank settlement was privatised in the 1980’s, which is when Snaiths Salads was founded.
The area benefits from high light levels along the Humber Estuary, which continue through the winter.

Crisp Lettuce
Crystal Lettuce has a satisfyingly crunchy and a juicy bite. The thicker structure of the leaves, combined with their attractively frilled edges, makes this type particularly interesting for the foodservice sector because the leaves can withstand heat better than other lettuce types and hardly ever turn bitter.
Lollo Lettuce
Frilled and soft leaves, a classic lettuce which has been popular for decades and across Europe. Available in Red (Lollo Rosso) and Green (Lollo Bionda)
Multi-Leaf Lazy Leaf
A large head of multi leaf lettuce makes this very versatile for end user. Loose salads or sandwich fill, these types offer exceptional value.
