Enza Zaden
Established in 1938 by Jacob Mazereeuw under the name of ‘De Enkhuizer Zaadwinkel’ today we are known as Enza Zaden. In 1959, the son of Jacob, Piet Mazereeuw, started the company’s breeding activities. The first successes in breeding were soon achieved (e.g. the tomato varieties Extase and Campari). Since 2011 Jaap Mazereeuw is the third generation to join Enza Zaden’s Management Team. In 1985, the first subsidiary outside the Netherlands was established in the United Kingdom.
Enza Zaden is an international company, or rather, as we like to put it ourselves, a multilocal company. With breeding stations and commercial branches in all parts of the world. We work with local people who know all the ins and outs of our sector and their local market
Enza Zaden is one of the few vegetable breeding companies with a separate subsidiary, Vitalis, that develops and sells vegetable seed especially for the organic market.
Enza Zaden is one of the founding fathers of KeyGene, one of the largest biotechnological companies in the world of plant genetics.
An entrepreneurial spirit and innovation have been the driving forces behind Enza Zaden’s rich history. So much is already evident from the strong determination with which Jacob Mazereeuw established De Enkhuizer Zaadwinkel (‘The Seed Shop of Enkhuizen’) back in 1938. And from the great success he achieved in selling his products. He did what he believed in and what he was good at. With this ambition and strong entrepreneurial spirit, he laid the foundation of Enza Zaden as a worldwide breeding company.
